Celebrating a new milestone for Tunisian women workers
On the 23rd of February 2017, more than 20 women from ICTS, Commerce, Graphical, and Postal and Logistics, from UGTT, met in Tunisia to discuss women’s issues, relaunch the Tunisian Women’s Network and celebrate the election of Naima Hammami as the first woman to join the Executive Board of UGTT.
Veronica Fernandez Mendez, Head of UNI Equal Opportunities, began the workshop by highlighting the work and tenacity of Tunisian women in the fight for equal rights in society and in unions. She then continued to introduce the work of the UNI Equal Opportunities Department, including campaigns and activities.
The debate that ensued her presentation highlighted certain aspects of the situation of the women in Tunisia such as the lack of women in leadership and decision making positions within union structures and the lack of programs and activities for women in the region.
The meeting was also an opportunity to re-launch the activities of the Tunisian Women’s Network, who worked tirelessly to promote the election of Mme. Hammami to the UGTT Executive Board.
