Empowering women at the Scottish Parliament
To observe International Women’s day, the Scottish Women’s Convention held an activity on Saturday 4th March at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, under the motto “Empowering Women”.
More than 400 women from all backgrounds and spheres of society, including government, civil society and the arts, participated at this event. The First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, opened the ceremony together with Agnes Tolmie, chair of the Scottish Women’s Convention and member of UNI World Women’s Committee and UNI Europa Women’s Committee
Our Head of UNI Equal Opportunities Department, Veronica Fernández Méndez was also invited as a keynote speaker. During her speech, she highlighted the importance of empowering women as a way to gain equality.
“Equality is living without fear of violence. Equality is receiving equal pay for equal work. Equality is having a voice and equal representation to make the decisions that will change our lives. Equality empowers us. Together we can make it happen” she concluded.
