Nepal: Forum on Trade Union and Future World of Work
Kamanthu, Nepal - UNI Nepal recently organised a forum about the future world of work on 22 July. It was dedicated to highlighting the forthcoming challenges of digitalisation, platform/gig economy, and artificial intelligence (AI) at work and trade unions' role in addressing them.
Colleagues from UNI and UNI Apro were present and actively contributed to the forum. The senior coordinator of UNICTS, Alex Hogback spoke about UNI Global Union's initiative on the issue of future world of work such as its efforts in pushing for a convention or standards on AI.
Regional Secretary of UNI Apro, Christopher Ng, the guest of honour of the forum, said that trade unions must recognise the risks arising from the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Even if the signs are not obvious yet in places like Nepal, trade unions should remain vigilant and focused about achieving decent work for the workers. He also urged the trade union leaders to proactively lobby and act at the national and local to address the challenges.
Trade union leaders from the four major national centres were invited as panel speakers on the issue. They generally agree that trade unions should be well aware about what the future world of work may hold for the workers, and the trade union movement should lead in developing the policies instruments to protect the workers from any ill effects.
