UNI Americas Commerce: we continue to grow together!
With a clear debate on where we are going, raised during the UNI Americas Forum on Electronic Commerce and the Forum on Multilatin Company Networks, the 5th UNI Americas Commerce Conference continued discussions on the challenges faced by the sector, and the importance of solidarity and unity of action in the face of changes in labour relations and the new world of work.
More than 80 delegates from the Americas reported on organising achievements and the obstacles they face, as some companies continue their anti-union practices in the Americas. However, the growth of UNI Americas continues to make the region one of the most dynamic with regards to organising.
"When we look at the statistics and see where organising rates go up and down, it is definitely in this region where we are growing the fastest" said Mathias Bolton, Head of UNI Commerce.
"When I speak of a dynamic region, I am also talking about how different strategies are implemented to achieve growth and the building of power for the workers. What is happening in Walmart here in Chile is a clear example of the activists' fight against what we do not want for the workers" he concluded.
In this regard, Juan Moreno, General Secretary of the Walmart Intercompany Union, thanked the international support of UNI and its affiliates in the mobilisations, and the massive Assembly that helped in the negotiations with the company.
At the end of the day, José Luis Oberto was re-elected president of the sector for 2017-2021, and the Executive Committee was expanded with the participation of new unions.
