UNI Global Union statement on deaths of 37 Filipino contact centre workers
UNI Global Union, the global labour federation for contact centre workers, demands an independent and thorough investigation into the deaths of 37 Filipino contact centre agents on the 23rd of December 2017. The workers died after a fire engulfed the New City Commercial Center mall in Davao where the contact centre was located. The contact centre belonged to the Research Now SSI company, based in the United States.
Contact centre work is not inherently dangerous and Filipino authorities must get to the bottom of what caused such large loss of life. UNI also calls on the US based clients of Research Now SSI to investigate how so many supply chain workers were killed, and together with the contact centre company, set up a fund to compensate the families of the victims.
UNI Global Union sends its deepest condolences to the victims of the Davao fire and their families.
