Unions call for respect of editorial independence of the Catalan public service media
The global community of media and entertainment unions affiliated to UNI Global Union joins their colleagues of the public service media of Catalonia, CCMA including TVC, Catalunya Ràdio and CAN in their call to respect the independence of public service media organisations.
UNI MEI Global Union President, Gerry Morrissey said: "UNI MEI and all its affiliates express their solidarity with colleagues and their unions of public service media of Catalonia. We support the manifesto adopted by the assembly of the workers of TV3 and urge Spanish authorities to refrain from any intervention, which would harm freedom of speech, the independence of the media and the fulfilment of the public service mission of the public media organisations."
Quality and independent information of citizen is the basis of our democratic societies. Independent public service media is a pillar for guaranteeing the quality and independence of information. Public service media is the ownership of citizen not governments or political parties.
William Maunier, President of the European Region (EURO-MEI) stressed that "the community of media unions in Europe call on authorities to respect and cherish the values of public service media and guarantee the fundamental rights of citizens".
