UNI Global Union Statement on Pay Raises for Amazon Workers
Nyon, Switzerland—“Amazon workers have been in motion around the world over the past month, when we’ve seen a union election in Bessemer, strikes in Germany Italy and France and a new campaign launched in the UK. It’s no wonder that Amazon wants to throw some pennies at the problem," said Christy Hoffman, General Secretary of UNI Global Union. "We welcome any well-deserved increase in pay for all Amazon workers, but it does not address the fact that workers want a seat at the table and to negotiate over pay, health and safety, production targets, and a better future for their families."
More than any company, Amazon has benefited from a health crisis that has allowed the tech giant to deliver record revenue and a net profit that is up 84%. It’s time for Amazon to learn that collective bargaining is a vital tool that modern societies and companies use to make their businesses more responsible and democratic. Mr. Bezos, there is no need to reinvent the wheel, collective bargaining is a tried-and-true model which has delivered progress for working people over many decades around the world.”
UNI Global Union represents more than 20 million workers from over 150 different countries in the fastest growing service sectors in the world. UNI and our affiliates in all regions are driven by the responsibility to ensure these jobs are decent and workers’ rights are protected, including the right to join a union and collective bargaining.
