Algorithmic management is the use of algorithms and artificial intelligence tools in the workplace to gather and analyze data to either support or supplant human managers. They range from simple software that tracks employees’ working time or scans CVs for keywords, to much more sophisticated tools that rely on large amounts of data to predict customer footfall in shops, allocate shift patterns, distribute tasks to workers, or even decide who to hire, promote or reassign. Algorithmic management is most often used in recruitment, performance management, and everyday workplace decision-making in a wide variety of circumstances.

Unions have an important role to play in negotiating about the fair, transparent, purposeful, and ethical use of algorithms in the workplace. Read our report to learn more about the opportunities and challenges presented by algorithmic management, and what unions should demand of employers.
