Malaysia: DHL Union Wins Recognition Ballot
Workers in DHL Global Forwarding in Malaysia have voted overwhelmingly to recognise the UNI affiliate which has been organising workers there for several years. Elections held in the last week in Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru were certified and the union has been recognised with 80 % of votes in favour of the union.
The union election comes after many months of difficult organising work coordinated by the UNI Malaysia Liaison Council and UNI Post & Logistics. The victory for the DHL workers is an important milestone in UNI's efforts to organise workers across the logistics industry and in DHL in particular. It comes in the shadow of another union victory in Malaysia where last week commerce workers in Robinson & Co. voted to recognise their union.
The DHL union will now begin preparing for its first collective bargaining agreement and in growing its membership across Malaysia.
