{"id":10687,"date":"2023-06-16T14:22:53","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T12:22:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/?post_type=news&#038;p=10687"},"modified":"2023-06-16T14:22:53","modified_gmt":"2023-06-16T12:22:53","slug":"uni-joins-demand-for-release-of-imprisoned-unionists-in-belarus","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/news\/uni-joins-demand-for-release-of-imprisoned-unionists-in-belarus\/","title":{"rendered":"UNI joins demand for release of imprisoned unionists in Belarus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNI joined global unions and trade union activists in Geneva to speak out against the repression of workers\u2019 rights in Belarus, to stand in solidarity with jailed trade unionists in Belarus and to call for their immediate release.<\/p>\r\n<p>This followed the historic decision of the ILO, following two decades of inaction by the Government of Belarus, to adopt a resolution under Article 33 of its constitution challenging Belarus\u2019 continued disregard for workers\u2019 rights and the arrest of countless trade unionists.\u00a0 A process that has only been used once before in the over 100 year history of the ILO.\u00a0 This creates the possibility of sanctions against Belarus for their abuse of freedom of association and increased support for those persecuted for standing up for worker\u2019s rights in the country.<\/p>\r\n<p>Maksim Pazniakou, acting president of the the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions (BKDP) told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.industriall-union.org\/unionists-demand-all-charges-against-jailed-belarusian-trade-union-leaders-be-dropped\">rally<\/a> that, \u201cYour support is very important for those in jail; they know that they have support from the outside and that they are not alone.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>UNI Assistant General Secretary Alke Boessiger said, \u201cThe Government of Belarus must immediately release all trade unionists jailed simply for standing up for the fundamental rights of workers.
