UNI Afric<\/span>a, along with the entire UNI Global Union family,\u00a0stands in full solidarity with\u00a0our affiliate\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Union marocaine du travail (UMT) and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the people of<\/span>\u00a0Morocco following a catastrophic earthquake on 8 September 2023, with a magnitude of 7. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Th<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>devastating\u00a0<\/span>earthquake<\/span> hit regions like Rabat, Azila and Marrakech, with the epicent<\/span>re<\/span>\u00a0near Mount Toubkal in the High Atlas Mountains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n The current numbers are staggering: over 3,ooo lives lost and nearly 6,000 injured, many critically. UNI Africa echoes ITUC Africa’s call to international humanitarian agencies to swiftly provide assistance to affected communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n “We\u00a0<\/span>would like to\u00a0<\/span>express our heartfelt condolences and\u00a0<\/span>join the ITUC Africa\u2019s demand for urgent support,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0wrote\u00a0UNI Africa Regional Secretary Keith Jacobs<\/strong> in a letter to the UMT, “UNI Africa\u00a0<\/span>is calling for<\/span> the relevant international humanitarian agencies to mobilize and deploy the necessary means and materials to assist the affected people and communities.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n \u201cWe urge\u00a0<\/span>global solidarity and support for Morocco as it embarks on a challenging path to recovery. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and help Morocco\u00a0<\/span>rebuild after<\/span>\u00a0this tragedy.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n UNI General Secretary Christy Hoffman<\/strong> said, “UNI and our affiliates around the world\u00a0stand shoulder to shoulder with the UMT and the people of Morocco in the wake of this disaster. We express our deepest sympathy and solidarity with those who lost loved ones, those who have been injured and those who have lost their homes.
