The UNI Thai Liaison Council, comprising UNI affiliates in Thailand, met with UNI Asia & Pacific Regional Secretary Rajendra Acharya on March 12, 2024, to initiate groundwork for boosting organizing and union growth within UNI’s jurisdiction. They also discussed preparations for the 6th UNI APRO Regional Conference, set to take place from November 20th to 22nd, 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand.

The UNI Thai Liaison Council represents UNI affiliates in six key sectors: Commerce, Finance, Graphical & Packaging, ICT & Related Services, Post & Logistics, and Media, Entertainment & Arts. These affiliates form an integral part of the national network.

The collective ambition is to ensure that the conference serves as a platform for robust dialogue, strategic collaboration, and impactful resolutions, leaving a strong organizing wave to follow up in union building.

One of the objectives of the conference is to spotlight Thailand’s potential for union organizing and representation. As the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia, Thailand’s service sector contributes a significant 56% to the country’s GDP, highlighting the importance of focusing on the service sector workforce and the potential for union growth. The 6th UNI APRO Regional Conference seeks to amplify efforts, fostering greater inclusivity and empowerment within the workforce.

To demonstrate the global UNI leadership’s support for the Thai affiliates, UNI General Secretary Christy Hoffman is scheduled to visit Thailand in April 2024. Her anticipated meetings with the Thai Liaison Council and other stakeholders will strengthen collaboration and advance the conference’s objectives.

More than 400 delegates and observers are expected to attend this significant event in the heart of Bangkok in November 2024.
