UNI Global Union has observed the unfolding situation in Bangladesh with increasing alarm and concern. We are in contact with our affiliates and our priority is the safety and wellbeing of workers and their families.<\/p>\r\n
\u201cWe condemn the brutal response of the previous Government to the legitimate calls of the people for change,<\/em>\u201d says Rajendra Acharya, UNI Global Union Regional Secretary for Asia and Pacific<\/strong>. \u201cWe expect those responsible for the violence and deaths of many hundreds of demonstrators to be held accountable for their actions. There must be full and independent investigations into the killings, with justice for the bereaved families<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\r\n The protection and safety of peaceful demonstrators must be guaranteed, with full respect for the civil liberties of the Bangladeshi people in accordance with international human rights and labour standards obligations.<\/p>\r\n \u201cEmployers must fulfill their responsibilities to their workers.\u00a0 Salaries must be paid and the health and safety of workers, including the practical issues of travelling to and from places of work, safeguarded,<\/em>\u201d said Alke Boessiger, UNI Global Union’s Deputy General Secretary<\/strong>. \u201cThis is an extremely worrying time, but there is hope for a future Bangladesh where workers rights are protected and trade unions respected.\u00a0 We will continue to provide support and solidarity to our affiliates and will work with them in their efforts to build a peaceful, democratic and better future for Bangladesh.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n UNI Global Union calls for those forming a new Government in Bangladesh to actively engage with trade unions.
