Workers at DHL in Côte d’Ivoire have successfully elected union representatives for the first time, marking a significant victory for SYNAPOSTEL, UNI Global Union’s affiliate in the post and logistics sector. This milestone comes after years of dedicated efforts to establish constructive relations between UNI and the German multinational logistics company at both the regional and global level.

“This is a great victory for workers, who will finally have a voice at DHL Côte d’Ivoire. It’s a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when workers come together and stand united. We are truly grateful for the international solidarity that helped to make this possible. This is just the beginning, and it will lead to better working conditions and a stronger future for the workers,” said Tiepo Arsene Ahoke, General Secretary of SYNAPOSTEL.

The path to the elections, held in November 2024, was aided by the adoption of the 2023 due diligence law in Germany, which bolstered the partnership with DHL Côte d’Ivoire. However, the journey, was not without challenges. Initial efforts to organize elections in 2016 were unsuccessful and prompted SYNAPOSTEL to seek mediation through the country’s labour inspectorate, with support from UNI. Progress in organizing ensued in July 2019 with the establishment of the DHL Alliance, supported by UNI’s German affiliate, ver.di, and the protocol signed between DHL, UNI and the International Transport Federation (ITF) under the OECD framework.

Further strides were made in June 2022 when social dialogue was strengthened within DHL Côte d’Ivoire, leading to the formation of the National Union of Workers of DHL-Côte d’Ivoire (SYNAT DHL CI) during a landmark assembly.

“This hard-won victory is a testament to the commitment and perseverance of all involved, showcasing the power of solidarity and social dialogue in building strong, stable and sustainable relations in the workplace,” said Keith Jacobs, UNI Africa Regional Secretary. “We congratulate SYNAPOSTEL on their significant win, which will no doubt lead to better conditions for workers.”

Photo: UNI workshop with DHL workers in Côte d’Ivoire in 2019

Workers at DHL in Côte d’Ivoire have successfully elected union representatives for the first time, marking a significant victory for SYNAPOSTEL, UNI Global Union’s affiliate in the post and logistics sector.
