{"id":27020,"date":"2025-02-10T11:10:17","date_gmt":"2025-02-10T10:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/?post_type=news&#038;p=27020"},"modified":"2025-02-10T17:18:42","modified_gmt":"2025-02-10T16:18:42","slug":"paris_ai_action_summit","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/news\/paris_ai_action_summit\/","title":{"rendered":"UNI GS to AI Action Summit: Workers must help shape AI\u2019s future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Speaking at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CUf6Jb1RxZs\">Artificial Intelligence Action Summit today<\/a>, <strong>UNI Global Union General Secretary Christy Hoffman<\/strong> outlined an urgent decision facing our societies: either let AI widen the gap between rich and poor or give workers a seat at the table to shape its future.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Representing more than 20 million workers across 150 countries, Hoffman joined a high-profile panel on \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elysee.fr\/en\/sommet-pour-l-action-sur-l-ia\/programme\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Harnessing AI for the Future of Work<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d where she will call on governments, employers and tech giants to put people at the centre of AI innovations.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the dynamics of AI in the economy, she stressed:<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWorkers everywhere have fear about their futures, and for good reason. Our societies are not ready for an AI transformation.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWorkers don\u2019t have confidence that employers will include them in decisions about how and where AI will be used, that their jobs are safe or that they will have a chance to learn the skills that will be required to move forward.<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cPeople fear losing not only their livelihoods but also their way of life. But we know it does not have to be this way. A voice on the job goes a long way towards addressing fear and minimizing risks. Unions have successfully negotiated new technology at work for a very long time.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the need for social dialogue, Hoffman said:<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe know from history\u202fthat an inclusive AI transition is possible but far from guaranteed.\u202fAccording to even modest projections, many millions are likely to be displaced by AI over the next five years. And we can\u2019t sweep those people under the rug or watch them fall through the cracks.<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe have important choices to make about the kind of future we want, and time is running out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWith the right ground rules, set by people-centred policies and hammered out through social dialogue and bargaining, we can rise together.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hoffman spoke alongside: <strong>Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus; Gilbert F. Houngbo, Director General of the ILO; Denis Machuel, CEO of the Adecco Group; and moderator Sana de Courcelles.<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/about\/sectors\/ict-related-services\/african-tech-workers-rising\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">African Tech Workers Rising<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a UNI-backed project, is also at the summit as a featured presenter. Former Facebook content moderator Sonia Kgomo represents thousands of data supply chain workers in Africa and beyond who are organizing for better wages, safer jobs and accountability from Big Tech companies for conditions at subcontractors.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As one of the few Summit participants speaking directly on behalf of workers, Hoffman\u2019s perspective underscores urgent need for collective bargaining, consultation and transparency regarding technology at the workplace \u2013 especially AI.
