We are delighted to have trade union activist leaders from all across Europe here with us in Belfast.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Addressing the Conference, <strong>Northern Ireland\u2019s First Minister Michelle O\u2019Neill<\/strong> praised the vital role unions play in delivering social justice. \u201cSolidarity is at the heart of the trade union movement,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to be a guiding light and work with the trade\u00a0union movement. I want to build a fair, prosperous and just society.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-27511\" src=\"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-4-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"535\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-4-1024x538.png 1024w, https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-4-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-4-768x404.png 768w, https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-4-565x296.png 565w, https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-4.png 1130w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/>Outlining her government\u2019s priorities \u2013 including job creation, regional balance, productivity and decarbonisation \u2013 O\u2019Neill added: \u201cI recognise the role of the trade union movement as a key stakeholder. You have been the custodians of social justice.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>CWU General Secretary Dave Ward<\/strong> invoked the legacy of the Good Friday Agreement, now 27 years old, and its lessons for unity in action: \u201cProgress has been made. But now we must unite again: to stop the rise of the far right across Europe, to tackle the challenges of climate change and AI, to build a new model of collective bargaining.\u201d He concluded: \u201cCollectivism must always be at the heart of everything.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Gerry Murphy<\/strong>, <strong>Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) Assistant General Secretary<\/strong>, reflected on Belfast\u2019s transformation: \u201cNot long ago our biggest export was people. Now, thousands of skilled workers are coming to Belfast with their families to build careers. Our mission is to be a beacon for collective bargaining and progressive employment practices.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jim Furey,<\/strong> <strong>Assistant General and Divisional Organiser of Mandate Trade Union<\/strong>, underlined the importance of legislative change in Ireland: \u201cWe are proud members of the Respect at Work campaign, which aims to improve legislation on collective bargaining in the Republic of Ireland.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>At the same time, <strong>Susan Fitzgerald<\/strong>, <strong>Regional Secretary for UNITE the Union in Ireland<\/strong>, cautioned against an overreliance on legislate change: \u201cLegal rights mean little on their own \u2013 bargaining must be done from a position of strength. And we do this through organising.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-27510 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-2-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"524\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-2-1024x538.png 1024w, https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-2-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-2-768x404.png 768w, https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-2-565x296.png 565w, https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-2.png 1130w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 524px) 100vw, 524px\" \/>In a powerful panel on organising, union leaders shared insights into revitalising union membership and adapting to the changing world of work. <strong>Annika R\u00f6nni-S\u00e4llinen<\/strong> <strong>from PAM<\/strong>, Finland, emphasised structural transformation: \u201cWe have changed our organisation so that collective bargaining experts and organisers are in the same team. We need to repeat our message again and again until it sticks.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Sandra Steiner<\/strong> <strong>from GPA<\/strong>, Austria, highlighted the importance of inclusive strategy and media visibility: \u201cOur cooperation with EPOC helped us win a strong collective agreement. We realised we weren\u2019t fully addressing women\u2019s demands in the sector\u2014so we changed course and made it public. Employers were surprised by how many workers we mobilised.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>From Ireland, <strong>Gareth Murphy<\/strong> <strong>of the Financial Services Union<\/strong> shared tangible success stories: \u201cUnion renewal is about rebuilding membership \u2013 and strategy. Organising isn\u2019t one department, it\u2019s a union-wide effort.\u201d He noted that since working with UNI Europa\u2019s European Power and Organising Centre (EPOC), FSU has doubled its annual membership growth to over 1,000 new members per year, while expanding into new sectors like games and securing pioneering agreements, including one on artificial intelligence in banking.<\/p>\r\n<p>A second organising panel, moderated by <strong>Daniel Hugli<\/strong> <strong>from Syndicom<\/strong>, Switzerland, showcased how sector-based campaigns are transforming the landscape for workers across Europe. <strong>Silke Zimmer<\/strong> <strong>from ver.di<\/strong>, Germany, shared the long fight to improve conditions at Amazon: \u201cWith Amazon came the hope for good jobs, but what arrived was a culture of surveillance and pressure. Our first strikes were in 2013 \u2013 today we\u2019re in 13 facilities. We fought for \u2013 and won \u2013 basic rights like toilet breaks and water access.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Malgorzata Szulc<\/strong> <strong>from OPZZ-KP, <\/strong>Poland, discussed the union\u2019s pioneering role in tech: \u201cWe were the first to organise at Accenture in Poland. Now, we&#8217;re building TechForce \u2013 an alliance of tech unions.\u201d She emphasised the impact of cross-sector training: \u201cMost of our active unionists have taken part. That\u2019s how we build capacity across the economy.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Florentin Iancu<\/strong> <strong>from SITT<\/strong> in Romania highlighted a major victory at Auchan: \u201cIt took nearly three years, but through issue-based organising, we built our union and achieved a collective agreement. This win proves that with the right approach, it is possible \u2013 even in the most challenging environments.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Alke Boessiger,\u00a0 Deputy General Secretary of UNI Global Union<\/strong> introduced a new initiative aimed at ensuring corporate accountability through labour rights. \u201cThe Competence Center for Human Rights Due Diligence is made possible through strong collaboration among all project partners and the financial support of the German government and their development agency, GIZ,\u201d she said. \u201cOur mission is to ensure that human rights due diligence strengthens respect for workers\u2019 rights \u2013 particularly by enabling freedom of association and collective bargaining.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-27509\" src=\"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-3-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"543\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-3-1024x538.png 1024w, https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-3-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-3-768x404.png 768w, https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-3-565x296.png 565w, https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Opening-Ceremony-3.png 1130w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 543px) 100vw, 543px\" \/>Reflecting on a quarter-century of progress, <strong>Peter Hellberg<\/strong> of Unionen said: \u201c25 years ago, Unionen didn\u2019t exist. Now, UNI Europa is our common organisation and a strong voice for workers. I believe the next 25 years will be just as successful.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Christy Hoffman<\/strong>, General Secretary of UNI Global Union, closed the opening session with a powerful message: \u201cWe have supported countless unions over the past 25 years. But we must \u2013 and we will \u2013 become even stronger in the next 25.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Echoing that call, <strong>Oliver Roethig<\/strong>, UNI Europa Regional Secretary, said: \u201cUNI Europa is about a strong labour movement and making a difference for services workers.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>As the Conference continues through the week, the focus remains clear: building power through unity, expanding collective bargaining, and organising to win dignity, fairness, and justice for all workers in Europe\u2019s service sectors.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Conference brought together over 600 union leaders from across Europe to mark 25 years of UNI Europa \u2013 and chart the path forward.
