Argentina’s largest labour federation, the General Confederation of Labour (CGT), has called for a mass mobilization in defense of pensioners’ rights and in protest against sweeping austerity measures introduced by President Javier Milei’s administration.

Workers across the country staged a nationwide strike on Wednesday, supported by UNI Global Union’s Argentinian affiliates, who are demanding fair wages, the protection of pensions, and the restoration of collective bargaining rights.

“We will support the just demands of retired workers, reaffirming our commitment to those who dedicated their lives to the progress of our country,” said Héctor Daer, President of UNI Americas. “From the CGT, we envision a nation built on development and decent work.”

Since taking office in December, the Milei government has launched an aggressive economic restructuring programme aimed at slashing public spending. While the administration touts progress toward fiscal balance, critics say the cost is being borne overwhelmingly by working families and retirees.

Trade union leaders argue that the austerity package – welcomed by international financial institutions – has led to sharp declines in incomes and public services, while banks and corporations post soaring profits.

Marcio Monzane, Regional Secretary of UNI Americas, stated: “What we are witnessing in Argentina is not just a national crisis – it is a warning for the entire region. When a government abandons its social commitments in the name of market dogma, it is workers who pay the price. At UNI, we stand shoulder to shoulder with the Argentinian people in defense of democracy, dignity and the rights of all.”

In recent months, Argentina has seen mounting social unrest, with unions decrying what they describe as unjustified repression of protests and a dismantling of democratic gains. The CGT’s Plan of Action calls for an end to repressive tactics, the protection of free collective bargaining, and urgent relief for pensioners facing rising costs and diminished benefits.

UNI Global Union expressed its full solidarity with Argentine workers and pensioners, stating that the defense of dignity, democracy, and social justice remains central to the global labour movement.

Argentina’s largest labour federation, the General Confederation of Labour (CGT), has called for a mass mobilization in defense of pensioners’ rights and in protest against sweeping austerity measures introduced by President Javier Milei’s administration.

[165,86

post-27609","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","regions-argentina","regions-uni-americas
