Click or tap if you trust this link.\" href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpetitions.ituc-csi.org%2Fpalestine&amp;data=04%7C01%7CTom.Myers%40uniglobalunion.org%7C9c2f46b6d2df499c1ced08d9f21006bf%7C8359b2e0aed64063acb178f9effecd0a%7C0%7C0%7C637806972925140470%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&amp;sdata=YfC4Yu3PejjbW0uBpJAJt7k8Ii0fdskajSOguDas%2Ftg%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"Verified\" data-linkindex=\"0\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">ITUC petition<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0on the matter launched last week.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">First published in 2020, following a four-year delay, the database is an invaluable resource in identifying those companies whose activities have \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\">directly and indirectly, enabled, facilitated and profited from the construction and growth of the settlements<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.\u201d\u00a0 These settlements are illegal under international law, and the database is used by a broad swath of civil society, human rights defenders and socially responsible investors.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Currently, t<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\">he database is\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">significantly\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\">out of date and urgently needs updating to help expose and end corporate complicity in the illegal occupation<b>.<\/b>\u00a0Adding and removing companies from the database creates a necessary incentive and deterrent against engaging with Israel\u2019s illegal settlement industry.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">UNI has previously used information contained within the database to engage in dialogue with\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\">Norway\u2019s largest pension fund KLP<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, which led to them<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\">\u00a0divest<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ing<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\">\u00a0from 16 companies due to their ties to Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">. UNI reached out to\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\">Norway\u2019s sovereign wealth fund, managed by Norges Bank,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">who\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\">pulled out of construction and real estate companies in the Palestinian territories<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">UNI General Secretary Christy Hoffman said:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cC<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\">ompanies identified by the\u00a0UN\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">in this database\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\">as enabling the settlements are unacceptably intertwined with human rights abuses<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.\u00a0 The database is a crucial tool that shines a light on companies active in the settlements and rightly adds to the pressure on business to withdraw.\u00a0 But it is only as useful as the information contained within it. That is why it is absolutely necessary for the database to be updated now and maintained going forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Resolutions adopted at the UNI World Congresses in 2014 and 2018 included explicit<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\">\u00a0call<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\">\u00a0for action to end economic support for the illegal settlements, which are an impediment to peace and put the two-state solution beyond reach.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">UNI is encouraging all affiliates to add their names to the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CH\"><a title=\"Original URL: https:\/\/petitions.ituc-csi.org\/palestine.
