{"id":7138,"date":"2022-05-20T10:50:47","date_gmt":"2022-05-20T08:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/?post_type=news&#038;p=7138"},"modified":"2022-05-20T10:50:47","modified_gmt":"2022-05-20T08:50:47","slug":"uni-europa-youth-rising-up-to-organize-and-strengthen-unions-worldwide","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/news\/uni-europa-youth-rising-up-to-organize-and-strengthen-unions-worldwide\/","title":{"rendered":"UNI Europa Youth rising up to organize and strengthen unions worldwide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"en-US\">This month, over 40 youth activists representing 12 countries from all over Europe came together to participate in the UNI Europa Youth summer school.<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">The Youth summer school is an opportunity for young activists to learn from their peers about successful campaigns, how to organize unions, strengthen collective bargaining at multinational companies and bolster international solidarity. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe title=\"UNI Europa Youth 2022\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8VL7s0FFS60?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Attendees heard about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/business\/2021\/1223\/1268429-dunnes-10-pay-rise\/?fbclid=IwAR0JLLGaXLikwkbHzq3yN7OdpMhhJltw1CYu1LkKfWtC6C7Q6f2T39mHK0o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">successful organizing pushes<\/a>\u00a0led by young trade union leaders such as the Decency at Dunnes campaign in Ireland. After almost two years of campaigning, almost 10,000 Dunnes workers saw a 10 % increase in pay as part of a Covid pay premium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">The campaign showed that the solution to many of the challenges young people face is crystal clear \u2013 organize. For young people, joining a trade union and honing their negotiating, communications and campaigning skills is the strongest tool to ensure that youth get a fair deal at work. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">As we emerge from a global pandemic which has had a debilitating impact on many young workers, the dynamic training saw young trade unionists take action to develop the solutions and skills to overcome the challenges we face.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Participants also worked on sharpening their social media skills by creating video content (for Tik Tok and other platforms) designed to inspire young workers into trade union work.<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Head of UNI Youth Marta Ochoa said, \u201cthe strength of this summer school is that young trade unionists can bring back the negotiating, communications and organizing skills they learn from each other and apply them to their own campaigns back home.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen firsthand the positive impact that peer-to-peer training like at the UNI Europa Youth summer school can have for young people,\u201d continued Ochoa. \u201cThese trainings give young people the tools they need to succeed in building impactful organizing campaigns, strong trade unions and international solidarity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">UNI Europa Youth will be holding their global conference in Gdansk 1-3
