{"id":7477,"date":"2022-06-27T14:52:07","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T12:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/?post_type=news&#038;p=7477"},"modified":"2022-06-27T15:40:47","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T13:40:47","slug":"uni-americas-sets-framework-for-its-5th-regional-conference","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/news\/uni-americas-sets-framework-for-its-5th-regional-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"UNI Americas sets framework for its 5th Regional Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 29-30 June, 600 union leaders of UNI Global Union\u2019s Americas Region, representing 24 countries and 124 trade union organizations, will meet in Fortaleza, Brazil, with a clear aim: to build a bold agenda, set within Latin America\u2019s current political transition, that channels workers\u2019 power to strengthen democracy, expand human rights and consolidate social, environmental and economic justice.<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>Marcio Monzane, Regional Secretary of UNI Americas, said: &#8220;In our region, there is no more room for democracies without respect for workers&#8217; rights, precarious jobs, inequality and discrimination. With the recent rise of progressive governments, unions must have an active role, be heard and have greater space for participation in society.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>Hecto D\u00e1er, President UNI Americas, said: &#8220;There are no robust democracies without powerful unions, which solidly assume the defence of workers&#8217; rights. Workers have been profoundly affected by new technologies, platforms, labour law reforms, and telework, resulting in a increasing labour precariousness and the need to defend rights and establish new norms.<\/p>\r\n<p>The political scenario in the Americas is in transition, with the rise of social movements and the return of progressive governments in Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Honduras, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and possibly Brazil, while the fight against far-right movements and policies, many of whom can be described as fascist, is growing stronger.<\/p>\r\n<p>Trade unions have been a major player in this transition, and workers have a historic opportunity to increase their power and influence.<\/p>\r\n<p>At the roundtable to frame the conference, UNI Americas will address important achievements and future proposals in the following areas:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The defence of human rights, and the strengthening of democracy, to guarantee the participation of all social actors, including workers and their union representatives.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The organization of workers, including new sectors, on the job and beyond; the strengthening of collective bargaining and the building of unity at the national and international levels.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Building alliances with progressive governments to raise workers\u2019 voices and include workers\u2019 interests in processes of change. For example, these include reducing poverty and inequality, and combating racism and other forms of discrimination.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><em>UNI Americas is based in Montevideo, Uruguay; it is the regional arm of the Swiss-based UNI Global Union, which represents 20 million workers worldwide in the finance, media and entertainment, sports, care, cleaning, security, commerce, casinos, postal,
