Victory comes with legal support from FIFPRO<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n
This week, Icelandic footballer Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir won a landmark case against her former club Olympique Lyonnais for failing to pay her full salary during pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
The ruling saw Bjork Gunnarsdottir, who won the Champions League twice at Lyon, become the first player to win a claim against a club through FIFA\u2019s Maternity Regulations, which were introduced after pressure from FIFPRO.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
The ruling stipulated that Lyon must pay unpaid salary of over\u00a0<\/span>\u20ac<\/span>82,000.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
Since January 2021,\u00a0FIFA\u2019s Maternity Regulations rule that\u00a0female players are entitled to\u00a0<\/span>be paid at a 100% during their pregnancy and until the start of their maternity leave, which is of\u00a0<\/span>a minimum of 14 weeks\u00a0<\/span>at a minimum of\u00a0<\/span>two-thirds of their salary.<\/span>\u00a0However, whilst at Lyon, the club failed to pay Bjork Gunnardottir\u2019s salary\u00a0<\/span>before she started her\u00a0<\/span>maternity leave.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
“This is not ‘just business’,”\u00a0wrote\u00a032-year-old\u00a0<\/span>Bjork\u00a0<\/span>Gunnarsdottir\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span>Player’s Tribune,<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0after the\u00a0<\/span>ruling was made public on Tuesday.<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/p>\r\n
