{"id":1201,"date":"2021-05-18T17:35:05","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T16:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/?post_type=report&#038;p=1201"},"modified":"2022-02-17T15:53:23","modified_gmt":"2022-02-17T15:53:23","slug":"covid-19-an-occupational-disease-where-frontline-workers-are-best-protected","status":"publish","type":"report","link":"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/report\/covid-19-an-occupational-disease-where-frontline-workers-are-best-protected\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19: AN OCCUPATIONAL DISEASE &#8211; WHERE FRONTLINE WORKERS ARE BEST PROTECTED"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"node-title\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">A<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/uniglobalunion.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/covid-19_an_occupational_disease.pdf#overlay-context=\">\u00a0new global study<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0from UNI Global Union and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has found that 98 per cent of the world\u2019s workers are not getting the sick pay, wage replacement and social benefits they need to withstand the impacts of COVID-19.<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<div class=\"mCSB_container\">\r\n<div class=\"region-inner region-content-inner\">\r\n<div id=\"block-system-main\" class=\"block block-system block-main block-system-main odd block-without-title\">\r\n<div class=\"block-inner clearfix\">\r\n<div class=\"content clearfix\">\r\n<div id=\"node-news-41270\" class=\"ds-2col-stacked-fluid node node-news node-promoted view-mode-full node-published node-not-sticky author-richard-elliott odd clearfix clearfix\">\r\n<div class=\"group-footer\">\r\n<div class=\"body\">\r\n<p><strong>Key findings:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Only ten jurisdictions (5.5%) received top ratings indicating good or very good provisions for wage replacement, medical treatment, sick pay, and death benefits.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Sick pay was available in 104 jurisdictions, meaning that almost 43% of workers had no access to paid sick leave.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Only 6% of the studied jurisdictions had presumptive rules, regulations, laws or policies that give automatic access without proof to medical treatment and wage replacement for all workers. However, when considering healthcare workers this percentage rose to 17%.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Argentina received the top score for a country, showing that strong support for workers does not depend on a nation\u2019s wealth.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>In Germany and the Nordic countries, existing legislation on infectious diseases means that workers who contract COVID-19 have automatic access to sick leave, wage replacement and medical care. No formal change was needed to the legislation to support workers.
