UNI Global Union will welcome Nobel Prize-winning economist, Joseph E. Stiglitz, for a webinar on 28 September entitled “Getting the fair economy the world needs – the role of the finance sector in a post-Covid society”.
Stiglitz, an American professor at Columbia University, is a Nobel Laureate for economics and chief economist of the Roosevelt institute. He is also a former chief economist at the World Bank.
UNI Finance, which has organized the webinar, represents three million workers in the banking and insurance industries through 237 unions around the world. Angelo Di Cristo, Head of UNI Finance, said:
“We are honoured and excited to host Joseph Stiglitz at our webinar. We look forward to hearing his insights as unions in the finance industry face the challenges posed by Covid-19 while seeking to drive the transition to a more sustainable economy that invests in people, public services and the community.”
Stiglitz is is renowned for his work on income distribution, risk, corporate governance, public policy, macroeconomics and globalization, and the author of many books, most recently People, Power, and Profits: Progressive Capitalism for an Age of Discontent.
UNI General Secretary, Christy Hoffman, who will moderate the discussion, said:
“We are at a pivotal moment in time with the chance to reset the global economy post-Covid-19. I eagerly await Joseph Stigltiz’s views on how we transform our current economic system into a sustainable model that cuts inequality and provides a fairer and more just society for workers.”
