Hong Kong: Unions continue to struggle for better conditions and assistance for workers during Covid-19 Pandemic on May Day

Labour Day reminds us that dignity at work has not been fully realized. Long working hours, low wages still plague a vast majority of Hong Kong workers even during the pandemic.  This year, the police objected to HKCTU’s May Day Rally application on the ground that crowds may endanger public health and safety.

However, the unions are undeterred and planned for alternative activities to express workers’ demands. Unions set up street stations to answer inquiries, to propagate collective bargaining rights, to ask workers to join unions and to unite together to fight against social injustice. The street stations also collected signatures to express support for unemployment assistance for workers affected by the Coronavirus Pandemic.
