Since last year, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW-STTP) have been fighting for better working conditions, paid overtime, and an end to inequality between rural and urban postal workers. More than 50,000 workers took place in rolling strike actions in cities and towns across the country, until they were legislated back to work in November. So far, management refused to accept the demands of CUPW, and it has rolled out a series of unfair tactics.
Canada Post is tarnishing its good reputation of postal services with its attacks against the trade union. Canada Post even asked international posts to halt deliveries for several weeks.
CUPW-STTP continues their fight, and arbitration relating to the back-to-work process starts Januaray 16.
“We will not stop fighting until we have solved our health and safety crisis, maximized full-time secure employment opportunities in the postal service, and reached equality for women”, says Mike Palecek, CUPW national president.
The international support of CUPW-STTP won’t stop!
UNI Global Union and its affiliates will continue to support the CUPW-STTP and the Canadian postal workers. The American Unions APWU, NALC, National Nurses United, Teamsters, the BCTGM and SEIU sent a strong signal to the Canadian government with an action day on January 15, 2019 telling Prime Minister Trudeau that “Union busting’s got to go!”
“In the spirit of international solidarity, more than 30 postal unions from all over the world sent solidarity letters to the CUPW and letters of concern to the Trudeau government. We will continue to support the fights of our Canadian brothers and sisters, and we are calling unions all over the world to meet with the Canadian embassies and demand postal management returns to the negotiation table,” says Cornelia Broos, Head of UNI Post&Logsitics.
