Malaysia: UNI-MLC’s 1st virtual video conference discusses pressing labour issues arising from Covid-19 pandemic

UNI-MLC held its 1st virtual Video conference recently on 5 June 2020 which saw more than 50 leaders from affiliated unions participating in the virtual zoom meeting.

The main issues discussed in the meeting:

  • Work from Home arrangements during COVID-19 pandemic covers the following sectors: Finance, Postal & Logistics, Commerce, Media and Entertainment, Gaming, Telecom (ICTS), Graphical & Packaging, Property & Services and, UNICARE.
  • Job loss, retrenchments, VSS/MSS and Pay-cuts involving members from various sectors which has reached critical stages.
  • The leaders agreed that the issues arising have become very critical and needed concerted action by UNI-MLC to raise it with the managements and the industrial Relations department of the Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia.

The meeting agreed to hold a workshop specially to discuss and develop an action plan to address the issues which arose during Covid-19 pandemic:

  • Closure of businesses
  • Terminations
  • Retrenchments
  • Downsizing
  • Voluntary separation scheme (VSS)/ Mutual Separation Scheme (MSS)
