This week marks the 74th anniversary of the atomic bomb attacks of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The attack killed more than 210,000 people, and left devastating health consequences for many more.
“On the 74th remembrance of this horrific attack, we reaffirm UNI’s commitment to peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons. This kind of indiscriminate death and destruction should never be unleashed again,” said Christy Hoffman. ”We stand with the people of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and the world in demanding an end nuclear arms—especially in this time of growing insecurity and tension.”
Last week a UNI APRO delegation met the Mayor Taue of Nagasaki to build on the strong connections forged with Nagasaki when the city held UNI’s World Congress in 2010.
Since then, UNI has worked with the Nagasaki Peace Messengers as well as organisations like the Nobel Peace Prize laureate International Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and the International Peace Bureau (IPB) to disseminate a message of peace and non-violence.
At UNI’s World Congress in Liverpool last year, UNI reiterated its steadfast commitment to a world without nuclear arms.
Next week UNI will welcome the Nagasaki-Hiroshima Peace Messengers at UNI’s head office in Nyon, Switzerland.
