UNI Global Union has joined with other GUFs and the ITUC in calling on China to agree to the demands of the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU).
In a letter addressed to China’s UN ambassador in Geneva, the GUFs called for the Hong Kong administration to immediately enter into dialogue with the HKCTU and civil society to restore justice and implement democratic reform.
These demands include:
- Permanent withdrawal of controversial extradition law and release of the arrested protestors without charge
- An independent investigation into police violence and abuse of power
- Implementation of universal suffrage
- UNI joined with other GUFs in a protest in Geneva on Friday 30 August. The conflict continued to escalate over the weekend with the arrests of many more democracy activists.
UNI Global Union General Secretary, Christy Hoffman said, “Its clear that the people of Hong Kong want democracy and they’re prepared to fight for it. We urge the Chinese government to negotiate a settlement to address this urgent demand instead of escalating the crackdown on dissent.”
