UNI MEI participated in the 56th General Assembly and Associated Meetings of the ABU, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, that took place from the 19th to the 22nd of November in Tokyo, Japan.
Hosted by NHK, the Japan Broadcasting Corporation, under the theme ‘Building Trust: Enhancing Audience Experience’ the gathering of over 600 representatives from across the region addressed a variety of issues including digital transformations and the future of broadcasting, media ethics, the role of broadcasters in natural disaster prevention, and diversity and inclusion.
It is on the latter topic that UNI MEI had been invited to speak during the 8th Women With the Wave: Broadcasting for All, Diversity and Inclusion in the Media Forum held on Tuesday 19th of November. On the same panel as representatives from OECD, UNESCO, and EBU (the European Broadcasting Union) Daphne Tepper, UNI MEI Project Directors, presented UNI MEI’s work for enhanced gender equality and diversity in the media, entertainment and arts sectors in the different world regions, and underlined the outcomes of the important partnership on gender equality and diversity developed in Europe with sister unions federations FIA, FIM and EJF, as well as public and private broadcasters, EBU and ACT, and film & tv producers, FIAPF and CEPI.
UNI MEI’s participation in this meeting illustrates the good co-operation between ABU and Uni Apro MEI in the Asia-Pacific region; a partnership that will hopefully be pursued through concrete projects in the near future.
While in Tokyo Daphne also met with UNI MEI’s Japanese affiliates: Nipporo, NHK Workers’ Union, and MINPOROREN, Japan Federation of Commercial Broadcast Workers’ Unions.
