Amcor Trade Union Alliance launches campaign supporting Malaysian workers

AMCOR workers in Malaysia are organizing for a living wage, safer working conditions and better benefits. And unions around the world – the Amcor Trade Union Alliance – have their back.

The company is engaging in union-busting tactics – even unfairly firing Sister Siti Sanijah Binti Musa, Secretary of the BEMIS Asia Pacific Workers Union.

This dismal is the latest in a long campaign in Malaysia to stop worker organizing. Anti-union tactics include:

  • Intimidation: Workers are being harassed to discourage union membership, with incidents serious enough to warrant police complaints.
  • Pay Reductions: Union leaders like Sis. Siti have been financially penalized, with wages cut by 50 per cent for 19 days.
  • Voting Interference: During a secret ballot in April 2024, the company deliberately sent workers home early, preventing many from voting, particularly targeting migrant workers.

But AMCOR Malaysia workers are not giving up, and Graphical & Packaging unions are united to demand an end to Amcor’s union-busting. As BEMIS Asia Pacific Workers Union prepares to resubmit its recognition request at the end of October, trade unions have launched a campaign to show support.

How You Can Help

  1. Donate to the Solidarity Fund: Support Sis. Siti Sanijah and other Malaysian workers financially punished for their union work. Every donation helps cover lost wages and sustain their fight for justice.
  2. Spread the Word: Share campaign materials and encourage your colleagues to get involved. Together, we can amplify this message across Europe and beyond.
  3. Ask Questions: Challenge your local management about Amcor’s policies towards union-busting and demand transparency.

Together, we can send a clear message to Amcor: workers’ rights are non-negotiable. An injustice in Malaysia is an injustice everywhere. Let’s stand in solidarity with Sis. Siti Sanijah and all Malaysian workers—because when we stand together, we win together!

This campaign is led by the Amcor Trade Union Alliance, UNI Graphical & Packaging, IndustriALL Global, and their affiliates.
