Bangladesh: Women and Youths lead online May Day Commemoration amidst pandemic lockdown

Amidst the pandemic lockdown still in place in Bangladesh, the UNI BLC Women and Youth Committees jointly arranged a virtual discussion over Zoom to commemorate May Day.

The UNI BLC program officer Mahjabin Mitalee and Women Committee Chairperson, Ms. Ruksana Perven jointly moderated the program. The UNI BLC President, Mr. Amjad Ali Khan, Coordinator and Executive General Secretary, Mr. A.K.M Mostafa Kamal were invited as Guest Speakers and observers. The digital initiative attracted a good number of women and youth committee members to take part in the discussions.  

The hour-long discussions were fruitful. It covered the importance of workers unity to overcome challenges and heightened awareness about their rights. Concerns were shared about employers who are not paying salaries during this pandemic lockdown period. The participants also openly shared their concerns in the coming days about job security, health security, women empowerment, and care workers right. Women rights issues were equally discussed such as the need to support steps to eliminate discrimination against women in society, and stopping domestic and workplace violence against women.
