In a show of unity and hope, UNI Global Union affiliates—the Korea Finance Industry Union (KFIU) and the Korean Health and Medical Workers’ Union (KHMU)—joined a broad coalition of national labour federations in a rally at Gwanghwamun Square on 21 June. The action marked an early call for constructive engagement with the new administration led by President Lee Jae-myung, who took office earlier this month.
Organised under the slogan “Everyone’s Wish! The Public Opens a New World Together,” the coalition urged the government to reset its approach by ensuring meaningful worker participation, upholding international labour standards, and prioritising the public interest over austerity.
KFIU President Kim Hyung-sun noted that the administration has a historic opportunity to restore democratic practices and social dialogue.
Among the recommendations submitted were calls to prohibit privatisation, expand public sector employment, and address long-standing issues of wage discrimination and precarious work—including the elimination of irregular positions.
The participation of UNI affiliates builds on previous efforts, including the KFIU‑IBK union’s 120-day protest at the Industrial Bank of Korea to end discriminatory wage practices and restore collective bargaining rights.
As Korea begins a new chapter, the labour movement is calling for a renewed commitment to decent work, fairness, and inclusive governance. The rally signals a hopeful start to rebuilding trust between government, labour, and the people.
