Canadian postal workers are a lifeline for their communities. However, on 15 November, over 55,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW – STTP) were forced to go on strike after nearly a year of negotiations with Canada Post yielded insufficient progress.

Postal workers are defending their working conditions as well as the quality of service they’re proud to deliver. Their demands include fair wages, safe working conditions, the right to retire with dignity and the expansion of services at the public post office.

Their walk off started, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service appointed a new mediator to facilitate negotiations between CUPW and Canada Post, and the CUPW negotiators met with the new mediator and a previously involved mediator to continue discussions.

There are positive signs, but the strike is far from over.

CUPW has called for solidarity from unions and allies worldwide to support their cause. They emphasize that their struggle is not only for postal workers but also for the preservation and enhancement of public postal services that benefit communities across Canada.

As negotiations continue, CUPW remains committed to reaching a fair agreement that addresses the needs of postal workers and the communities they serve. The union’s call for global solidarity underscores the importance of collective support in labour movements worldwide.
