At this week’s AI Action Summit in Paris, over 70 employers signed a Pledge for a Trustworthy AI in the World of Work – which includes key commitments to collective bargaining and union consultation, training and upskilling, as well as lifting labour standards in the AI supply chain.
The document, one of the summit’s significant outcomes, aligns corporate commitments with the latest frameworks from the OECD, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the G7, reinforcing the push for AI that supports workers rather than displacing them.
Christy Hoffman, General Secretary of UNI Global Union and featured panellist at summit, welcomed the signings saying:
This pledge moves us closer to harnessing artificial intelligence in ways that respect workers’ rights and promote a fair economy, and we commend the first signers for their leadership.
In the days and weeks after the summit, we must work together to turn these commitments into concrete actions. That means making genuine progress on expanding social dialogue and collective bargaining for both those impacted by AI as well as workers in its data supply chain. It means increased investments in training, expertise and skill building efforts as AI changes jobs.
This is not a replacement for regulation, but a complement to policies that promote an AI for the public good. Going forward, we will collaborate with employers, governments and international institutions to strengthen the commitments set out here and to make AI a force for decent work and economic justice.
