UNI GS sends message of condolence in wake of ‘heinous terror attack’

UNI Global Union condemns the heinous terror attack on innocent people attending Easter Sunday masses, and holidaymakers in Sri Lanka.

In a statement, UNI APRO said, “We stand in solidarity with all our colleagues in Sri Lanka and extend our sincere condolences to the families of those who have fallen victim to these terrible crimes. We also express comfort to the families whose loved ones are still receiving medical treatment and hope for their early recovery.”

“We urge President Maithripala Sirisena and his government to take immediate steps to ensure security and safety for all communities living in Sri Lanka, and initiate necessary actions to hold and bring to justice the criminals responsible for the vicious inhumane attacks.”

UNI Global Union General Secretary Christy Hoffman wrote to President Sirisena to express UNI’s shock and sadness at the attacks that have claimed more than 250 lives and left more than 500 injured.

In the letter Hoffman wrote, “On behalf of UNI Global Union, I would like to extend our deepest sympathy and condolences. There are some who seek to destroy our fundamental humanity and the principles of our society. But together, may we rise above this hatred and continue to find strength in the face of adversity to protect our shared values of peace and diversity.”

Hoffman said UNI’s thoughts were with our Sri Lankan affiliates and all those who had been caught up in the atrocities.
