Leaders of the UNI Malaysia Liaison Council (UNI MLC), a coalition of UNI Global Union affiliates in Malaysia, achieved another significant milestone by being appointed to the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC) for the first time.
The NLAC is Malaysia’s top tripartite advisory body comprising representatives from the government, employers and employees, responsible for discussing and advising the Minister of Human Resources on matters related to labour and human resources.
Three veteran leaders of UNI MLC, President Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal, Vice President Mohamad Ibrahim Hamid, and Treasurer Mathialaghan Veraragavam received their official appointment from the Minister of Human Resources Steven Sim, on 19 March during the first NLAC meeting for the year held in Putrajaya. Their appointments are effective from 1 May 2023 to 30 April 2025.
UNI MLC President Datuk Mohamed Shafie expressed his pride and gratitude in being accepted as a member of the NLAC, said,” I am very honoured that the government and the Minister of Human Resources have recognized UNI MLC’s contribution to the Malaysian labour landscape and appointed us to the esteemed National Labour Advisory Council. Our achievement today is also thanks to the extensive support and cooperation we have with UNI Asia & Pacific over the years, enabling us to grow.”
Rajendra Acharya, Regional Secretary of UNI Asia & Pacific, lauded the appointments, and said, “A heartiest congratulations to UNI MLC. Your appointment to the NLAC representing the labour interests, marks a new chapter and an exciting development for the organization. I look forward to hearing about your contribution to shaping the country’s labour policy in your work at the NLAC and helping to make a better future for workers in Malaysia.”
