UNION DELEGATION VISITS THE CANADIAN EMBASSY CONCERNED ABOUT THE MASS LAYOFFS AT SCOTIABANK

UNI Americas, together with its affiliate AEBU, rallied today at the Canadian Embassy in Montevideo, in solidarity and support for our colleagues at Scotiabank in Trinidad & Tobago, where the financial institution is making massive cuts and outsourcing its services. A letter addressed to the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, requesting his direct intervention, was delivered at the Embassy.

“We came to the Canadian Embassy because of the situation in Scotiabank Trinidad & Tobago, where more than 150 workers have been dismissed. We stand in solidarity here in Uruguay, just as UNI has been and will continue to be present in Canadian Embassies in the rest of the continent”, said Elbio Monegal, president of AEBU.

“We hope that Scotiabank remedies the situation and that our Trinidad & Tobago brothers and sisters can keep their jobs,” he concluded.

For his part, Guillermo Maffeo, Director of UNI Americas Finance, added: “All global trade unionism is mobilized, calling to put a stop to the dismissals at Scotiabank, for the bank to have a proper employment policy in place, and a good policy with the unions”.
