As you plan your trip to Mozambique, don’t forget to check your visa and health requirements. Please note that even passport holders from visa-free countries now need to fill out an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) form. Visitors coming from or via yellow-fever risk countries also need to be sure to have an up-to-date vaccination certificate.

🎉 25 June – Mozambique Independence Day
You will be visiting during a powerful moment. On 25 June, Mozambique celebrates 50 years of independence from Portuguese colonial rule. Expect parades, music, dance and cultural performances throughout the city. A key stop:
🔥 Flame of National Unity (Chama da Unidade Nacional)
The symbolic Flame of National Unity is being carried from Nangade in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, to Machava Stadium in Maputo, where it will arrive on 25 June. It is a call for all Mozambicans to come together, regardless of their political affiliations, to contribute to the nation’s progress.
🛤️ Estação do Caminho de Ferro de Maputo (Central Railway Station)
The iconic Maputo Central Railway Station (CFM) is a masterpiece of Beaux-Arts architecture constructed between 1908 and 1916. Often cited as one of the world’s most beautiful train stations, its grand façade and historic significance make it a must-visit. Inside, you’ll find the Museu dos CFM, which offers insights into Mozambique’s labour and transport history.
🧱 Fortaleza de Maputo (Maputo Fort)
While originally a colonial fortress, today the Fortaleza de Maputo also houses exhibitions that reclaim and reinterpret Mozambique’s resistance and independence history. Worth visiting during the Independence Day week.
🌿 Jardim Tunduru (Botanical gardens)
Once a colonial park, today this green space belongs to the people. Right in the heart of the city, Tunduru Gardens is a place for a quiet walk or a break between meetings.
🏠 Casa de Ferro (Iron House)
Right next to the gardens, this unusual all-metal house is now a site of curiosity. The unique prefabricated iron building is said to be designed by designed by Gustave Eiffel. Constructed in Belgium and assembled in Maputo in 1892, it was intended as the governor’s residence. However, it was never inhabited due to the tropical heat and, today, it is open to visitors.

🛍️ Mercado Central (Municipal Market)
Experience the hustle and bustle of Maputo’s central market, established around 1900. Browse stalls offering fresh produce, spices, crafts, and more, immersing yourself in the local culture.
🗿 Praça dos Trabalhadores (Workers’ Square)
Conclude your tour of Maputo at Workers’ Square, which pays homage to the contributions of workers throughout Mozambique’s history. Situated opposite the train station, the impressive monument in the centre is dedicated to the Mozambican and Portuguese soldiers of World War I.
