Uni Global Union’s Property Services sector is getting ready to welcome the President of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) to its global conference next week.
Mary Kay Henry will address delegates at the event in Chicago on 9 and 10 October, which marks 20 years of the Property Services sector at UNI.
Henry, elected as the leader of the SEIU in 2010, is expected to speak about unions as a singularly important solution to the crises facing American democracy and the economy. SEIU is currently leading the Unions for All campaign to address deepening, systemic inequality in society and the entrenchment of corporate interests in politics. The campaign is using the 2020 presidential elections to re-orient U.S. politics to put access to unions at the center of candidates’ economic platforms.
“We can win it all. If we join together. If we build power together. And the best way to do that is by joining together in strong unions, so there’s a seat at the table for every worker,” Henry said at the campaign’s launch. “The only way for us to build the power for working people is to have unions for all.”
Henry continued, “Every worker, every fast food worker, every healthcare worker, every airport worker, every school worker, every freelancer, every contractor, every single person should have the power to make sure our economy—and our democracy—works for them.”
During her presidency, Henry has helped spearhead the internationally renowned ‘Fight for 15’ campaign to raise the U.S. minimum wage to $15 an hour, developed system-wide healthcare organising strategies and advocated for non-traditional collective bargaining agreements.
