Ensuring health and safety in media and entertainment productions

UNI MEI members from Asia, the Americas and Europe gathered in Toronto on 3rd October 2018 in a workshop on health and safety in media and entertainment productions. During the event, hosted by IATSE Canada and its Local 873, members from across continents exchanged on different approaches and good practices addressing health and safety of workers in audiovisual and live performance productions.

Examples presented included initiatives from Canada, such as actsafe, the USA, Argentina, and Sweden. Discussions included different approaches to counter sexual harassment in media and entertainment industries. The Toronto workshop also introduced a number of planned regional initiatives, such as a project of establishing a European health and safety risk assessment tool in film and TV production, for which UNI MEI (in cooperation with FIA and CEPI, the European independent TV producers’ association) submitted a demand for EU co-funding in late September and which may kick off in early 2019.

UNI MEI plans to further deepen the dialogue amongst its members on health and safety in the coming years with similar cross-continental workshops and region-specific activities.
