The FSU Human Rights Network is inviting trade unions to show their support for democracy in Myanmar at a webinar on 28 July. The event will feature the inspiring story of resistance by activists on the ground and detail how affiliates can help restore justice in Myanmar.
The network, spearheaded by UNI Global Union’s affiliate, the FSU Australia, was launched in September 2021 to hold financial institutions in Australia to account for a range of important issues around corporations’ obligations to observe the rights of workers and the communities they serve.
This event echoes the call made at the 30th UNI APRO Executive Committee Meeting in their statement on 20 April 2022, which urged all international and regional businesses to enhance their business and human rights due diligence to ensure that they are not complicit in financing the junta to enable them to perpetrate gross human rights violations against the people of Myanmar.

The fight for justice in Myanmar and how we can make sure that Australian companies and institutions aren’t connected to human rights abuses.
The Myanmar military seized control on 1 February 2021 after a general election which Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party won by a landslide. Myanmar trade unionists and everyday people have taken to the streets in an extraordinarily brave defiance of the violent regime. The Myanmar government in exile has criticised Australia’s sovereign wealth fund (The Future Fund) for investing in several companies — including weapons manufacturers — that have done business with Myanmar’s military. Come along and hear about the inspiring story of resistance and how we can support justice in Myanmar.
