Almost 30 women from all corners of Africa, are meeting today at the UNI Africa Women’s Committee meeting, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, to discuss the work of women worker’s in the region.
The opening of the meeting was carried out by the president of UNI Africa Women and new UNI World Women’s President, Patricia Nyman, from SACCAWU, South Africa, as well as by the UNI Africa Regional Secretary, Keith Richards; the Head of the UNI Equal Opportunities Department, Veronica Fernandez Mendez; and the Director of UNI Africa Women, Leocadie Bodjouo.
Throughout the meeting, participants were informed of the work carried out by the UNI Equal Opportunities department both globally and regionally, including campaigns and activities, like the UNI World Women’s Conference that took place in Liverpool last June.
Members of the committee will also hold discussions around the three main topics of the UNI Africa work plan: mobilize, organize and innovate. Mobilization includes discussions on alliances and collective agreements, discrimination and harassment, and equal pay. On organizing, the topics will center on education and training and women issues in alliance meetings. Finally, on the innovation piece, participants will hear about the implementation of campaigns such as the Mentoring Program, building networks, and the Future World of Work.
