UNI in solidarity with people of Nepal affected by devastating floods

UNI Asia & Pacific expresses our deepest sympathies and solidarity with the people of Nepal, who are suffering tremendous loss from an ongoing natural disaster.

Since 26 September, continuous heavy rainfall has triggered widespread flooding and landslides, leading to the deaths of over 200 people, with many more injured or missing.

We are especially concerned for workers whose jobs are essential during this time. Care workers helping those who have been injured. Postal workers connecting their communities, and security guards keeping their communities safe, and others. This disaster also exacerbates the challenges faced by the vulnerable labour force, especially migrants and their families, and informal workers. Many have lost their homes and livelihoods, with farms and businesses submerged under floodwaters. Industrial zones and local markets are facing closures due to infrastructure damage.

Roads, including key highways connecting the capital city of Kathmandu to other parts of the country, have been blocked, causing significant disruptions to transportation and communication networks. Major road routes, including the Prithvi and Tribhuvan Highways, are obstructed by landslides, and critical bridges have been swept away, further isolating communities and halting trade. While over 3,000 people have been rescued, many remain stranded as rescue efforts continue.

Together with UNI Global Union, we express our solidarity and call on all international friends and the labour movement to help these workers rebuild their lives and secure their rights amidst this crisis.
