Athletes have long been champions in using their voice to advocate for political, social, and economic causes. Their activism has inspired many great social changes. However, athlete activism can also put them in harm’s way. While sport is struggling to fully embrace freedom of expression, authoritarian regimes are increasingly targeting athletes because of their visibility and influence.
